Frost Damage to Tiles in Your Swimming Pool — Durable Repair

Frost damage is perhaps the most underestimated silent killer of tiled outdoor pools. When water remains in joints or micro-cracks after drainage, this water expands by approximately 9 % at sub-zero temperatures. This expansion acts as a hydraulic lever, gradually breaking down joints, mortar, and tile glaze.

For pool operators, it is difficult to anticipate frost damage in winter — often the problem only appears in spring, when loose tiles and cracked joints become apparent. A renovation with epoxy mortar and ACRATON® Dolphin makes the pool immune to this annual risk.

How frost destroys tiles and joints

Cementitious joints are naturally porous and absorb water during the swimming season. When frozen, this absorbed water expands, cracking the joint and forming progressively larger micro-channels where even more water can remain — a vicious cycle. The glaze on ceramic tiles can only withstand this to a limited extent before hairline cracks also appear there.

After 3 to 5 winters, the damage pattern is usually clear: missing joints, tiles with cracked edges, and localised hollow spots under the tiling where the mortar has become detached.

The importance of a sealed surface

A flat coating has no porous joints for water to penetrate. ACRATON® Dolphin is a 2-component epoxy with 81 vol-% solids — chemically completely sealed and non-hygroscopic. Frost cannot affect such a surface, even if the pool is not completely drained during the winter months.

Approach for a pool with existing frost damage

Firstly, all already damaged tiles and loose joints are removed or roughened. The entire pool is fine blasted to eliminate cement laitance and weak spots. Subsequently, the applicator fills cracks and voids with epoxy repair mortar, applies a levelling layer, and finishes with two coats of ACRATON® Dolphin in the desired colour.

The result is a pool that is not only visually renovated but also structurally protected against future frost cycles.

Recommendations for winter shutdown

Even with a coated pool, it remains advisable to drain outdoor pools in winter or lower the water level below the skimmers and main drain. PoolFIX provides a simple checklist that you can use for annual winterisation — focused on protecting the installation, not so much the coating itself.

Frequently asked questions

Is ACRATON® Dolphin frost-resistant?
Yes. The chemically sealed film is non-porous and non-hygroscopic. Frost cannot build up a lever action within it as it does with jointing mortar.
Does the pool need to be completely empty in winter?
Not necessarily, but the water level must be below the skimmers and inlet/outlet openings. The coating itself does not require additional winter protection.
Can frost damage to the mortar under the tiling be repaired?
Yes. Loose sections are broken away and repaired with epoxy repair mortar before the levelling layer and coating are applied.
How many years of lifespan does this offer against frost?
Our references at German Alpine resorts show more than 25 years without significant frost damage.
Is this also suitable for very cold regions (-20 °C)?
Yes. ACRATON® Dolphin has been successfully applied in Scandinavian and Alpine pools without frost-related damage.
When should I plan the renovation?
The application itself must take place at a minimum of +5 °C. April–October is the usual window in the Netherlands. Plan with a margin of 4 weeks for working time and curing.
