Applying a coating over existing swimming pool tiles

A frequently asked question from swimming pool managers is whether a professional coating like ACRATON® Dolphin can be applied directly over existing tilework. The short answer: yes — provided the tilework is largely intact and the correct preparation is followed. This saves tens of thousands of euros in tile removal costs and significantly contributes to the sustainability of the renovation.

On this page, we explain when 'coating over tiles' is the right choice, what preparation is required, and what guarantees you can expect.

When can a coating be applied directly over tiles?

Three conditions must be met. Firstly: 80% or more of the tiles must be firmly adhered to the substrate (verifiable via a tap test by the applicator). Secondly: there must be no active cracks or structural movements in the concrete shell. Thirdly: the glaze must be sufficiently roughened by blasting for mechanical adhesion.

If these three conditions are met, a renovation with a coating over tiles is not only possible but often the economically and technically best option.

PoolFIX Preparation Protocol

1. Visual inspection and tap test on all tiles. 2. Blasting of the entire tile surface (removes glaze and biofilm, creates mechanical adhesion profile). 3. Replacing or removing loose tiles. 4. Levelling joints, cavities, and unevenness with 2-component epoxy mortar. 5. Dust removal and application of adhesive primer if necessary. 6. Two coats of ACRATON® Dolphin coating in the desired colour.

Advantages over tile removal

No demolition costs, no disposal of tile debris, no intrusive work on the concrete shell. The lead time is 30% to 50% shorter, and downtime for the operator is limited to 2 to 4 weeks instead of 6 to 10 weeks. Furthermore, the original pool design (dimensions, slope, stair sections) remains unchanged.

When should tiles be removed first?

In cases of widespread tile detachment (more than 25–30% loose), the presence of structural cracks in the concrete shell, or continuous delamination beneath the tilework, complete or partial removal is necessary. PoolFIX advises in such cases based on a personal inspection.

Frequently asked questions

Will the tilework still be visible afterwards?
No. Due to the combination of epoxy levelling and 2 coats of coating, the result is a completely flat, seamless finish.
Does this also work on glass mosaic?
Yes. Glass mosaic is roughened by blasting, and the epoxy levelling adheres excellently.
What if there are hollow spots under the tiles?
Hollow spots are broken open and repaired with epoxy repair mortar before the levelling layer is applied.
How is adhesion tested?
Via pull-off tests according to EN 13892-8. Values must exceed 1.5 N/mm² for warranty.
How long does it last?
With correct preparation and standard load, references show 20–30 years without major maintenance.
Do I get a warranty on the coating, even over the old tiles?
Yes, provided PoolFIX or a certified applicator has carried out the adhesion test and preparation. Conditions are stipulated in writing per project.
